A Visit from St. Nicholas On Sunday, December 6, the Eastern Church celebrates the feast of St. Nicholas of Myra, who was known for his works of compassion, generosity and mercy. Although Nicholas lived in what is now the country of Turkey, he is revered in all of the areas once part of Kyivan-Rus, with many churches named in his honor. There are many people who honor him as well as their patron saint. In addition to the feastday we celebrate once a year, each Thursday is dedicated to the saint in the tropar and kontakion. We pray for his intercession before God, and we ask him to help us be like him, showing living, active, and sacrificial love of God and our neighbor. St. Nicholas's feast also gives us the opportunity to come together as a parish to celebrate fellowship: this year, St. Nicholas came to our church and was greeted by our pastor, Father Ignatius. After a delicious brunch prepared by our parish men, St. Nicholas gave candy and gifts to all of the good children of all ages. We thank you, St. Nicholas! Before everyone went home, Walt Wolansky played his accordion and we all sang Christmas songs!
O, Nicholas, father and holy bishop, because of the shining example of your good works, your flock saw in you a model of kindness, a rule of faith, and a teacher of self-control. And so your lowliness raised you to the heights of greatness, and your poverty filled you with riches. Pray Christ our God to save our souls. In Myra, O holy father, you proved yourself a dedicated priest and servant of the divine mysteries, for you, O venerable father, fulfilled the gospel of Christ in that you gave your life for your flock and saved the innocent from death. In this way you attained true holiness as a great mystic of divine grace. (Tropar and Kontakion of the feast of St. Nicholas)
